Aldo Tagliabue obtained his doctoral degree in Biology in 1974 from the University of Milan, Italy and his PhD in 1976 at the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan. He did postdoctoral work at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland in the Laboratory of Immunodiagnosis directed by Ron Herberman where he did pioneering work in the cytokine field. He was at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario in the Department Pathology directed by John Bienenstock to study mucosal immunology. In 1979 he moved to Siena, Italy to build the new Immunology Department at the Sclavo Research Center in Siena. While there, he developed independent research projects in the field of mucosal immunology, applying his basic findings to investigate immune responses in volunteers treated with enteric vaccines and HIV patients. In 1990 he became Director of Research for Dompe’ (an Italian pharmaceutical and biotech company) in L’Aquila, taking responsibility for planning and building research facilities. He remained R&D Director until 1998. That year Aldo Tagliabue founded ALTA srl in Siena, Italy, a service provider company devoted to project engineering and transfer technology in biotech field with vaccine specialization. Among other things, ALTA is a leading company in supporting academic and industrial groups in applying and managing several projects from the 5th to the 7th 6th Framework Programs of the European Commission. From May 2002 to April 2005, Aldo Tagliabue has been appointed Deputy Director for Laboratory Sciences at International Vaccine Institute in Seoul, South Korea. In this role he contributed to build the Institute’s laboratory facilities and to develop research programs. The mission of IVI is to develop vaccine for poverty related diseases. At present he still heading ALTA in Italy. He was previously providing advices to Chiron srl in Siena as Associate Research Director and since April 2006 is Special Advisor for the Global Head of Vaccine Research at Novartis Vaccine being also involved in the start up of the Novartis Vaccine Institute for Global Health. During his scientific career, he has authored over 100 original scientific papers and edited several books in the fields of mucosal immunology and cytokines. He has also obtained 10 international patents. In parallel with his scientific and business activities, Aldo Tagliabue has been involved in teaching from the beginning of his career. He has been Adjunct Professor of Immunology at the Biotechnology Faculty of the University of Bologna in Italy from 1996 and Adjunct Professor at the School of Biological Sciences at Seoul National University in South Korea in 2003-5. Since 2005 is Advisor Board Member for the Center of Molecular Biotechnology of Fraunhofer USA Inc.
